Steven Galen Galen's Races

This page will work like a blog with the most recent race always at the top. After a long layoff, I am just getting back into training and I don't expect to run my next race until the spring of 2012.

Race 3

The Kingston Self Transcendence 6 Hour Race
I ran my third ultra on June 5, 2010 in Kingston, Ontario at Fort Frederick.

Saturday 9:00 am - Race Start
The race was run on a twisty 840 meter loop which was almost entirely pavement. From the start of the race, I never felt loose and I was dealing with minor cramping for much of the race but my improved fitness level was apparent. I took the lead at around 1.5 hours and I was first to the marathon split at about 3:23. My running was becoming increasingly labored and I was passed during the 5th hour by eventual winner Bruce Barteaux. I was almost certain that other runners would pass me but I was able to keep running and narrowly hold onto second place.

Race 2

Pick Your Poison 50K - 2010

Date: May 1, 2010
Result: 8th overall (out of 57)
Time = 5h 14m

This was a very tough race run on a 12.5 km loop. Not only was it very hilly, but there was a major rainstorm about half-way through the race that turned much of the course to mud. At around the 35 km mark, I thought I was done and I was planning on stopping after the third loop (37.5 km) was starting feeling reasonable again when I passed through the start/finish area.

Race 1

Horror Hill 2009 - 6 hour race

Result: 5th place - 59.8km

Horror Hill is an annual race at the north end of Waterloo and there were just over 20 runners entered in the 6 hr portion. It was my first race and I had only been training for 7 weeks but I was feeling good that morning. I was not the healthiest person at the time but I didn't want to change my routine on the day of the race so I went with the usual coffee and cigarettes plus a Tim Horton's breakfast sausage thrown in.

I felt great for the first half of the race and I didn't feel any fatigue until the 3.5 hour mark. It wasn't until the 5 hour mark that I was really hurting and wondering if I would be able to continue. I managed to keep running but a significantly reduced pace, which was good enough for 5th place and nearly 60 km. I could barely walk but I knew I'd be doing this again.
