Galen's Chess Problems - How to use features

Navigation bar

Below each diagram on the solution page is a navigation bar. This is one way to view games and puzzles on the display board. The diagram position will change as you navigate through the game and the last move played will be displayed beneath the board. It will also be highlighted in the game text on the right side of your screen. This feature is very helpful in following analysis.

The start button sets the diagram to the original position
The back5 button retreats the position 5 moves or to the nearest variation, whichever comes first
The back button retreats the position one ply.
The forward button advances the position one ply.
The forward5 button advances the position 5 moves or to the nearest variation ahead, whichever comes first.
The end button sets the diagram at the final position.
The flip button rotates the board 180°.
The autoplay button advances the position automatically at approximately 1 second intervals.
When you press the step button, it will turn black and variations will be included when you advance the position move by move, including during autoplay. Click the step button again to disable the feature.

Use PGN display
You can also navigate through a game by clicking on the moves printed on the right side of the screen. The main line is printed in bold-type black and the variations are printed in green. Click on any move in the main line or any variation and the diagram will reflect the appropriate position. You can alternate between the two navigation methods whenever you choose.

Experiment with position
The dynamic solution board allows players to experiment with the position by clicking on the piece you wish to move followed by the square you wish to move to (drag and drop doesn't work). When finished analyzing a line, press a button on the navigation bar to return to the PGN text.
